It’s a race against time to see how much wildlife can be found and identified in the gardens of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust headquarters, Banovallum House, in Horncastle and everyone is invited to come along and join in the fun.
Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust PR Officer, Rachel Shaw, said: “It’s quite incredible how many species live in gardens and we are keen to beat last year’s record of 357 species found and identified. We’ll also be on the look-out for different species of some our common garden creatures: ladybirds and earthworms. We only have one species of earthworm recorded from the gardens at Banovallum House but there are 28 species of earthworm native to Britain so there should be more to be found. And we’ll be looking to see how many species of ladybirds we have. Nine native ladybird species have been recorded; however we also have the invasive harlequin ladybird which may be having a detrimental impact on our native species.”
Everyone can take part in finding wildlife in the gardens by participating in pond dipping, minibeast hunts, snail safaris, bat surveys, moth recording, and other wildlife-related activities. There will also be fun children’s activities and admission is free. The BioBlitz is a unique opportunity to see and learn about the birds, spiders, bugs, worms, flowers and mammals that could be in your garden. You can drop-in to any of the activities on the Friday evening or throughout the day on Saturday. You can stay for as long as you like, whether it’s a few minutes or a few hours.
