Description and Management

Burlands Beck rises from a chalk cliff and forms a shallow pool of clear, cold water held in place by a dam. Freshwater shrimps and caddis larvae abound, and the little flatworm Crenobia alpina, a rare species found in lowland Britain in the cool headwaters of streams, lives under the stones. There are many birds to be seen here, including grey wagtail and dipper in winter, and in summer spotted flycatcher in the backcloth of trees.
