Do you want to gain experience at one of the UK’s largest mainland grey seal colonies during pupping season?

We are looking for individuals who are enthusiastic about natural history and are looking to start a career in nature conservation. You will be working with our Nature Reserve Wardens and volunteers.  Work includes species-specific protection, public engagement, supervision of other volunteers, habitat and livestock management.  

Training will be provided with a bespoke work programme to develop your skills and prepare you for employment within the nature conservation sector. On-site self-contained accommodation (single occupancy with utility bills included) is provided.

About this role:

  • This placement is suitable for anyone with an interest in wildlife and natural history looking to begin a career in nature conservation.
  • An exciting opportunity to support the Outer Humber and Coast reserves team in managing one of the UKs largest grey seal colonies at Donna Nook NNR during pupping season.
  • This is a flexible working programme, which will include regular weekend and bank holiday work (during seal season) based on a roster system.
  • Assisting with setting up and removal of seal season infrastructure, public engagement, supporting the volunteer seal wardens, helping with information, sales and associated responsibilities.
  • Opportunities for training in species recording and practical nature reserve management of a variety of habitats.
  • Our winter work programme includes habitat management on coastal, woodland, grassland and wetland reserves.

Requirements:

  • Enthusiasm to get stuck in!
  • Good people/communication skills, team working and the ability to be self-motivated are essential.
  • A willingness to work outdoors in all weathers, a strong work ethic and the ability to adapt to a variety of situations.
  • UK driving licence and access to own vehicle are desirable due to the remote location.
  • Some previous experience of practical conservation work, use of tools/machinery and public engagement would be an advantage.

What's in it for you?

  • The successful candidates will live on site in self-contained, single-occupancy accommodation (inclusive of utility bills) located at the regional workbase at Saltfleetby-Theddlethorpe Dunes NNR.
  • A wide range of experience in the nature conservation sector with in-house training provided.

Commitment: 5 days a week.

Duration: Six months minimum (mid-September 2024 until mid-March 2025), with potential for extension subject to mutual agreement (11 months maximum).
