Banovallum House wildlife garden

The garden at the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust headquarters in Horncastle has been designed to inspire you to make a space for nature in your own garden, whether through creating a native hedgerow, a wildflower-rich meadow or garden border that is buzzing with pollinators. 

Species list

Below is the plant list for the raised beds. Alongside the plant names are the county where they have been sourced, many of which have come from seed hand-gathered from Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust nature reserves.

Lowland heath and acid grassland

  • Heather (Calluna vulgaris) - Lincolnshire
  • Cross-leaved heath (Erica tetralix) - Lincolnshire
  • Sheep's-sorrel (Rumex acetosella) - Lincolnshire and Emorsgate Seed (Sufflok)
  • Devil's-bit scabious (Succisa pratensis) - Lincolnshire
  • Sheep’s fescue (Festuca ovina) - Lincolnshire
  • Heath bedstraw (Galium saxatile) - Lincolnshire
  • Mouse-ear hawkweed (Pilosella officinarum) - Lincolnshire
  • Common Stork’s-bill (Erodium cicutarium) - Lincolnshire 
  • Tormentil (Potentilla erecta) - Emorsgate (Oxfordshire)
  • Common Bent (Agrostis capillaris) - Emorsgate (Caernarvonshire)
  • Sheep’s-fescue (Festuca ovina) - Emorsgate (Yorks)
  • Sweet Vernal-grass (Anthoxanthum odoratum) - Emorsgate (Wiltshire)

Limestone grassland

  • Greater knapweed (Centaurea scabiosa) - Lincolnshire
  • Small scabious (Scabiosa columbaria) - Lincolnshire
  • Wild basil (Clinopodium vulgare) - Lincolnshire
  • Lady's bedstraw (Galium verum) - Lincolnshire
  • Glaucous sedge (Carex flacca) - Lincolnshire
  • Rough hawkbit (Leontodon hispidus) - Lincolnshire

  • Viper’s-bugloss (Echium vulgare) – Lincolnshire

Limestone: 50mm chip and dust, Lincolnshire. Sand and gravel: Buildbase, Lincolnshire.
Wildflower soil (low nutrient): Earth Cycle, Chichester. Peat free ericaceous soil: Melcourt Sylva Grow.
