About the reserve

Tunman Wood has existed as woodland since at least 1774 and is reputed to have been used as a cross country route by the Knights Templar. From the 1940s, when it was leased to the Forestry Commission, much of the wood was planted with conifers with areas of Norway spruce, Corsican pine and western hemlock. Much of this was felled in 2016 and replanted with oak and other broad-leafed trees. Despite being extensively managed in the past to provide timber it retains the characteristics of ancient woodland.

Plant life thrives on the open rides, woodland edges and banks, with species such as primrose, bluebell, water avens, dog’s mercury, wild arum, red campion and celandine. It is recommended to visit in spring and summer when birdsong and a range of woodland and grassland flowers provide varied interest.

Nearest postcode LN6 9EA. Please note - postcodes are for the nearest registered address as we are unable to get postcodes for nature reserves.

We request that visitors to Tunman Wood refrain from using the Willows Nursery car park (on Southern Lane, Eagle Barnsdale) to access the woodland.
