About the event

Join Horncastle and Woodhall Spa Area Group on September 7th for a walk around Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust reserve, Kirkby Moor. The walk will be continuing on from the morning walk around Roughton Moor Woods. If you are meeting the group only for the second walk please park carefully on the roadside and access the reserve (on foot only) via the pedestrian gate.

Kirkby Moor is the largest remnant of the once extensive heathlands of the Woodhall district. A large part of the reserve is dominated by heather and wavy hair-grass, together with moss and lichen communities. The southern part of the reserve is low lying and contains a lake originally made as a reservoir. There is oak, birch and pine woodland, and developing birch, hawthorn and sallow scrub with rowan and alder buckthorn.

This diversity of habitat produces a wide range of plants and animals. 250 plant species have so far been recorded, together with 275 moths, 20 butterflies and 11 dragonflies. About 60 species of birds breed on the reserve in most years and over 100 species have so far been recorded.

You do not need to be a member to join our activities, all welcome!.

There is another walk taking place at Roughton Moor Woods earlier on the same day. The group will be walking over from Roughton Moor Woods as the two reserves are close together. Please feel free to join us for one or both walks. If you are unable to attend the morning walk please meet us at Kirkby Moor at 1.30pm.
