Previous visits to Potteric Carr had been scuppered by a half-marathon cutting off the access road, and then two years of Covid, and as a result, Yorkshire Wildlife Trust kindly offered us all free entry. We had a lovely drive there on the coach (we enjoyed being able to see over hedges!) and on arrival some made straight for the cafe but others shot out to do the half-hour walk to the Pipers Marsh hide where black-winged stilts had been reported. And not just reported - they were nesting! So exciting to see these rare visitors and to see a change-over at the nest. We wish them every success, but are mindful of the fact that we also saw a very handsome fox prowling round the lakeside...
No-one managed to see the purple heron that was also apparently floating around, but the bird and flower list was impressive, and a grand day out was had by all, enhanced by the alternative scenic route that the coach took to get us home.
The following day, the Spilsby Area Group Committee ran a stall at Friskney Show, which went very well and was a good replacement for the Spilsby Show which was cancelled this year. We had a new gazebo, which we had to erect for the first time, but it turned out to be quite simple, and it didn't blow away like our old one did!
